I may have missed my chance to say “hi” and “thanks” to a great man.
Over the weekend, my wife and I left the Old Dominion and flew to California to attend the wedding of a friend of mine. We had a lovely time and the ceremony was beautiful – thanks for asking.
We took the redeye back from LAX to Dulles Airport. After landing, we were waiting for the AeroTrain to take us from our gate to the baggage claim area. The trams were running slow and so there were many people waiting. When the train did arrive and all of us groggy travellers began to queue up, one elderly gentleman cut his way all the way up to the front of the line – without so much as a by-your-leave.
On the train, as I was standing, this gentleman was seated right in my field of vision and I couldn’t help but notice the jacket he was wearing. It had, over his right breast, a patch for the Mission: SPACE ride at Epoct Center at Walt Disney World. On the left breast, where the nameplate would be, were two words….Buzz Aldrin.
Could it really be that the second man to walk on the moon was seated just a few feet away – and cut in my line to get a better seat on the AeroTrain?
I’ll never know because after the doors opened, I lost him in the crush of bleary-eyed, foot-shuffling zombies trying to get to Baggage Claim Area 14.
My wife thinks I’m nuts, but Mr. Aldrin was at Mission: SPACE and certainly would have received an honorary jacket with his name.
Sorry I missed my opportunity to say thanks and to ask how Michael Collins is doing.
