When I’m at a restaurant, I like good service and I’ll even tip well (up to twenty percent…thanks for asking) to show my appreciation.
However, I like to be the one who gives the tip rather than the restuarant itself.
Now, I have no issue with a check arriving that has a helpful calculation on the bottom that will tell me what a fifteen percent tip, a twenty percent tip, or even a twenty-five percent tip would be. I’m not a math major and I can take all the assistance I can get.
Also, I have no problem with an eating establishment posting on its menu the fact that “for parties of X of greater, a gratutity will be added“.
However, I have a huge issue with a restaurant that does not post such a warning and then proceeds to tack on a tip. So you can imagine my ire when I took the family (a party of folk that is a grand total of five) out to a local Ashburn (Virgina) restuarant and saw the following bill after our so-so meal:
What really galls me about the above bill is that the restuarant actually has the chuztpah, in addition to adding on their own fifteen percent, to provide a line for the person to write in the amount of a tip.
Had my wife not been so eagle-eyed, I would have simply written in my own fifteen percent.
I wonder how many other patrons have fallen for this ruse?
