Today, in my head, is Information Day.
Because today is April 11 and when that is written out in month-day format, it is 4/11.
Those of you above a certain age will recall the days when 411 was the phone number you dialed when you wanted directory assistance, or information.
With that in mind, and to celebrate my made-up holiday of Information Day, I offer you eleven (there’s your number for the day) tidbits of information for you to share and enjoy.
a) There are over 350 types of sharks in the world. This site says 354 to be exact.
b) The person who did the voice for The Brain in the animated series, Pinky and the Brain, also does the voice for Toucan Sam in commercials for Froot Loops. He is Maurice LaMarche and those are only two of many voice-overs he has done.
c) In the terminology of investing, a “put option” is an option contract giving the owner the right, but not the obligation, to sell a specified amount of an underlying security at a specified price within a specified time.
d) Catharism was a Christian religious movement that appeared in a region in the south of France (Languedoc) in the 1000s and grew during the 1100s and 1200s. It had dualistic and gnostic elements to it and the movement was crushed during the Albigensian Crusade (1209 – 1229).
e) Before World War I and the rise of Michigan and Detroit, Indiana was the home of the United States auto industry. Hadn’t you ever wondered why the premier auto race in the United States was held in Indianapolis?
f) The average scalp has between 90,000 and 120,000 hairs growing.
g) Henry VIII was the first member of the English monarchy to wear a pair of silk stockings. They hosiery was a gift from Spain.
h) Under federal food-labelling guidelines, around 97 percent of the caffeine must be removed from coffee for it to be considered decaffeinated.
i) This one is for triskaidekaphobics. The maximum number of Friday the 13ths a year can have is three. This year, 2012, is one of those years and this Friday will be one of those days. This article says that this phenomenon will not happen again until 2026.
j) The University of St. Andrews, founded in 1413, is Scotland’s first university.
k) The first movie that paired the duo of Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn was Sylvia Scarlett (1935). This film so embarrassed Hepburn that she offered to make another movie for free if the studio would destroy Sylvia. They didn’t.
Happy Information Day. Go out and inform someone.
